Education
In his excellent book The General Theory of Employment, Interest and
Money, John Maynard Keynes wrote, "Practical men, who believe
themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influences, are usually
the slaves of some defunct economist
. It is ideas, not vested interests,
which are dangerous for good or evil."
The objective of studying economics is not that you might become a defunct
economist. Frankly, although nothing livens up a party like a partially
inebriated defunct economist, the world has enough of those already. The
objective is to study the ideas of other great minds, to hold these ideas
up for scrutiny, and to decide for yourself whether these ideas pass the
test of reality.
Most universities and colleges offer a program of study that leads to
a degree in economics. Entrance requirements and degree-granting criteria
vary somewhat from institution to institution, as do academic requirements
for potential employment. Most universities offer employment posting services
and background information for graduates and employers.

Departments and Programs of Economics
This comprehensive list of departments and programs at accredited universities
and university colleges in Canada is categorized according to the classification
used by Maclean's in its annual ranking of Canadian public universities.
Primarily undergraduate universities focus on undergraduate education;
unless a graduate program is noted, you can assume that they do not have
one. Comprehensive universities offer a wide range of programs at both
the undergraduate and graduate level; graduate programs are identified
where they exist. Medical/Doctoral universities have medical schools and
always have graduate programs in economics. Maclean's does not
include public or non-profit private university colleges in its rankings.
They are included here in the primarily undergraduate category. Undergraduate
colleges that are associated with a university but provide separate economics
programs are listed with the university.

Departments of Agricultural Economics
While some Canadian departments of economics offer master's-level specializations
in agricultural economics, most graduate programs are offered in separate
departments. The master's degree in agricultural economics is usually
a Master of Science (M.Sc.) rather than the Master of Arts (M.A.) typically
offered in an economics program.

Graduate Programs in Finance
Finance, today, is the economic study of financial markets. Because of
its traditional association with Canadian faculties of commerce, most
graduate programs in finance are offered through business schools. While
most M.B.A. programs have a finance specialization, the list provided
here focuses on graduate programs offering master's-level and doctoral
degrees in finance.
